Monitoring for coronary insufficiency in patients who are prescribed hypothyroid medications is essential because these medications, primarily hormone replacement therapies such as levothyroxine, increase metabolic activity and can place additional strain on the heart. In patients with pre-existing cardiovascular conditions or those who are older, there is a potential risk for exacerbating coronary artery disease.

When thyroid hormone levels are normalized in a hypothyroid patient, the effects on the cardiovascular system can lead to increased cardiac output, elevated heart rates, and changes in blood pressure.
